Read More: Why We Need the Venice Film Festival? (1991), but the 2024 London Film Festival 'Queer' I kept thinking about this during the show: William S Burroughs probably provided the source material for both films. 1950s' Mexico, William Lee, an American writer on the wrong side…forty? fifty?
But what does Eugene want?
He spends his days getting drunk, shooting and having casual sex with other men. One day, a muscular, talented young man named Eugene walks into the bar and Lee is impressed. And there’s a telepathic drug to imagine… Stylistically, I don’t know what director Luca Guadagnino is trying to achieve with this film.

The sets are decorated almost exclusively in block colors – dark reds and olive greens, for example – and have that vaguely unrealistic, clean, techno look that I thought was an homage to the films of the era in which the film is set. But if that’s the case, why not a decidedly 1950s rock and techno soundtrack? Daniel Craig (is it my imagination, or is he starting to look like Sid James?) has to constantly shout nonsense in the lead role. Drew Starkey gives a great performance as the manipulative Eugene and he certainly looks prepared.
It’s okay if I watch it once, but I wouldn’t watch it again
Leslie Manville is unrecognizable as the South American jungle doctor – kudos to the makeup team! It’s the kind of movie that makes me think more about the art style than the storytelling.
